Recognition and Registration of Courses and Conferences

Doctoral candidates may attend courses from the University of Bern or external courses, summer schools, and conferences offered by other recognized institutions. If the selected courses and conferences are not in the GHS course catalog, they are subject to the approval of the GHS.

  • Course recognition requirements:
    • Only courses that include some form of active participation (e.g. exam, essays, holding a talk, presenting a poster) or assessments are recognized with ECTS.
    • Courses must be successfully completed at an accredited institution or university.
    • ECTS will be granted according to the ratio of the University of Bern; 1 ECTS = 25-30 hours of work.
    • Courses must be a minimum of 0.5 ECTS and on a 0.5 ECTS scale.
    • Courses must at least be at master level.
    • Courses are to be discussed with the supervision team and mentioned in the Doctoral Agreement and Progress Report.
    • In case of ECTS acquired as part of a CAS, please find further information here

  • Conference recognition requirements:
    • Active participation must be proven (oral presentation or poster).
    • Conferences must be successfully completed at an accredited institution or university.
    • Conferences will be accredited with 0.5 ECTS for half-day participation and max. 1 ECTS for 1 day onwards.
    • Conferences are to be discussed with the supervision team and mentioned in the Doctoral Agreement and Progress Report.
    • A conference presentation related to the same project or subproject can only be accredited once, even if it is presented at multiple different conferences. In case of uncertainties, please contact the GHS Office.

  • If you are attending an individual course, an external course or a conference and would like to have the ECTS accredited, you should send an official course or conference certificate issued by the organizing institution with the following information:
    • your name,
    • official course/conference title,
    • organizing institution,
    • for courses: name of lecturer(s),
    • for courses: grade or pass,
    • date of exam/completion of course or conference date(s),
    • proof of your active participation (e.g. exam, essays, holding a talk, presenting a poster),
    • ECTS (if known),
    • course/conference program.
If information about e.g. the program or active participation does not appear on the course/conference certificate, please include a PDF of the official course/conference program or a weblink to a detailed course/conference description.

  • The GHS Course Certificate can be used for courses instead of a course certificate from the organizing institution/university:
    • Hand it over to the lecturer(s) at the end of the course. They should complete the form, including course result, date, and signature.
    • Please scan the dated and signed certificate (PDF format only!) and send it to the GHS.
    • Please also attach proof of your active participation (e.g. exam, essays, holding a talk, presenting a poster).

  • Course registration in KSL:
    • Access KSL platform with your student campus account ("...@students.unibe.ch" email address).
    • Add the course to your "planning view."
    • Go to your "planning view," click on the grey arrow next to the course and click "sign in/off," then register for the course.
    • Please be aware of the registration deadlines; late registrations will not be accepted.
    • If KSL registration is NOT possible, you are requested to register for the course or exam directly with the organizer mentioned on the course description, stating your course of study (e.g. "Doctoral candidate at the GHS") and your matriculation number.
